Description
Renowned journalist and author of several bestsellers, Erik Larson, invites the reader to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Berlin in the 1930s—a turning point in Germany’s modern history, from Hitler’s appointment as chancellor to his seizure of power and the transformation of the country into a “garden of monsters”—a dictatorship actively preparing for war. During this period, the United States maintained a policy of non-interference and preferred not to notice the militarization, the persecution of dissenters, and signs of the coming terror. The main characters of the book are William Dodd, appointed in 1933 as U.S. ambassador to Berlin, and his daughter—a society lioness who at first admired Hitler’s regime. The plot is based on official documents, memoirs, diaries, and letters, allowing us to learn the fate of the main characters: diplomats, public figures, journalists, representatives of the Nazi elite, and ordinary people. Together with the ambassador and his family, the reader follows the path from rejection of reality to the realization of the evil brought by the Nazi regime—and then to desperate, yet unsuccessful attempts to warn the world about the impending danger.
