The novella “In My Hometown” tells the story of a front-line veteran who returns to Kyiv after being wounded. The protagonist, Viktor Nekrasov, named him after a fellow soldier friend—Nikolai Mitiasov.
A brief literary encyclopedia wrote: “Rejecting the canons of ‘conflict-free’ prose, Nekrasov showed what internal difficulties his hero, Nikolai Mitiasov, faces as he tries to find his place in the post-war world.” In 1955, in the House of Writers, writers discussed prose from 1954, and the brightest work of the past year was acknowledged as the novella “In My Hometown.”
In D. Bykov’s opinion, the novella turned out to be a sensation—if not bigger than “The Trenches.”
