Zia Nine is an ordinary girl who lives in a state-of-the-art high-tech house called the Shelter, and is raised by a multifunctional robot, Matr. And Zia Nine has never once gone outside, never felt raindrops cool her skin on the surface in the sweltering heat—doesn’t that feel like standing under a shower?—and she has never met anyone who looks like her—meaning, a human being.

And Zia Nine has a secret: the mysterious “Incredula.” It’s the word formed by the letters on a strange “tile” found in one of the Shelter’s secret corridors.
