The novel “In Search of a Unicorn” takes place in 15th-century Castile. King Enrique IV, nicknamed the Impotent, equips a detachment for an extremely dangerous mission: to obtain the horn of a rare creature—a unicorn—in order to make a potion that supposedly works without fail for male impotence. As the books of scholars claim, if a unicorn can be found anywhere, it can only be in faraway and unknown Africa—in the lands of Black people.
That is where the young hidalgo Juan de Olid, attached to the detachment, sets out—first by ship, then across the desert on camels, and afterward on foot through impenetrable jungles. However, the journey turns out to be far more difficult than expected, and it stretches into many long years, during which the Spaniards witness all kinds of wonders, experience gripping adventures, and learn how various African tribes live.
