“The First Primrose in Damp Dew” (2001) is the second book in the trilogy “CoDex 1962” (CoDex 1962) by the Icelandic writer Sjón. It tells of the arrival of Leo Löwe, a Jewish refugee, in Reykjavik from a German town—Küken(s)stad(t)—in 1944. Leo faces adaptation in a new country and meets Icelanders who have surprising ideas about their origins. In the process of his adaptation, Leo finds unexpected friends and allies, but he cannot revive a clay baby that has been kept in a hatbox for many years.
Sjón (b. 1962) is a well-known Icelandic writer, poet, playwright, and translator. He is also known as the lyricist for Björk’s songs and was nominated for an “Oscar” for co-writing her song for the 2001 film “Dancer in the Dark.”
