Description
In this collection of short stories, first published in 1903, the famous English writer E[d]ith Nesbit (1858–1924)—better known for her works for children—explores the world of adult relationships with her characteristic irony and psychological insight. Her characters are Edwardian men and women endowed with “literary instinct,” who are constantly trying to play out their feelings according to the scripts of great dramas and sentimental tales. This leads to a chain of tragicomic misunderstandings, ridiculous breakups, and belated realizations. Nesbit masterfully exposes the gap between lofty dreams of love and the realities of life, creating surprisingly modern and witty sketches of how a single word or gesture, wrongly understood and guided by a bookish notion of honor, can ruin destinies.
