Born in the Siberian village of Ust-Uda, a man from a peasant family, Valentin Rasputin, became one of the classics of Russian literature thanks to his talent and diligence. One of his best-known works is “French Lessons.” This is a story about childhood—about how a boy who had finished elementary school in his native village wanted to keep studying. “In our village area, no one before me had studied. I was the first,” the writer recalled. French lessons became lessons of life.
