Walden, or Life in the Woods

“Walden, or Life in the Woods” is one of the most famous books by the American writer Henry David Thoreau, first published in 1854 and, over time, recognized as a classic of world literature.

On the pages of the book, Thoreau describes in detail his experience of living in seclusion on the shore of Walden Pond, in the midst of the forest, where he went for several years. At the age of 27, he decided to go against society—becoming increasingly captivated by material values at the dawn of the consumer age—and to move away from people. This personal experiment was meant to show his contemporaries that happiness is possible outside the usual way of life—if one provides for oneself through one’s own labor. He built a cabin in the forests of Massachusetts and lived there for two years, two months, and two days, deliberately turning away from the comforts of civilization.
