Kōjirō Serizawa (1897–1993) is Japan’s foremost writer, in whose work the cultural traditions of the East and the West are interwoven. His literary legacy is extremely diverse: stories, novels, essays, philosophical reflections on the structure of the world and on faith. As the president of the Japanese PEN Club, he actively took part in the Nobel committee’s activities. Kōjirō Serizawa’s works have been translated into many languages and have earned well-deserved recognition both in the East and in the West.
His oeuvre is a grand panorama of the 20th century as experienced by a man with an acute sensitivity—deeply feeling—who by the will of fate became a firsthand witness to the great achievements and terrible upheavals of the modern world.
In Japanese poetics there is a term “after-feeling.” The deep echo born from the magnificent prose of Kōjirō Serizawa does not fade right away.
