Description

When I arrived at the crossing by mail coach, evening had already fallen. A cold wind stirred up ripples on the broad river and struck the waves hard against the steep bank. Hearing the mail coach bell from afar, the ferrymen stopped the ferry and waited for us. They braked the wheels, lowered the wagon, and unfastened the ropes. The waves hit the wooden sides of the ferry, the helmsman sharply turned the wheel, and the bank began slowly to recede, as if pushed away by the waves.
