Receiving the house as an inheritance, a friend invites Sasha to a small town near Moscow. Here it’s as if time has stopped! Monastery bells ring, a frozen river gleams, and faint wisps of smoke drift from the chimneys. The nuns make cheese; the neighbor bakes pies with jam and purrs contentedly with a cat at her side. Even mermaids splash in the frozen marsh, they say—at a good harvest. But someone believed an ancient legend: if you kill a girl, cut out her heart, and give it to the dead queen, you’ll be happy. And one after another, the murdered girls are found in the winter forest. How could friends allow that!
