In 1978, in the gardening partnership “Ogonyok,” on his plot of land, Nikolai Furman was killed by an axe. Under the leadership of Sergey Agafonov, an operational group quickly identified suspects: a neighbor woman who was the victim’s secret lover and wanted to break off the relationship, and another neighbor who had long wanted to get additional plots of Nikolai’s land. Both had reasons to want him dead. The investigation seemed standard: the suspects were identified, motives were clear, and the evidence was indisputable.
However, the unexpected conclusion of the forensic examination forced investigators to reconsider the seemingly obvious version.
