Description
A collection of classic Japanese works in the detective and horror genre, forming the basis for modern Japanese mystical literature.

Detective and horror are genres that hold a prominent place in contemporary Japanese literature. How did these genres develop to reach their current level? Where did detective fiction in Japan begin? How did the combination of traditional Japanese mystical stories and Western horror elements give rise to modern Japanese horror literature? The stories presented in this collection are the foundation on which, in the 19th–20th centuries, modern Japanese mystical and detective literature took shape.

Among the authors are Edogawa Rampo, a landmark figure of Japanese detective fiction, whose works are known for their gripping plots and unexpected turns; Oguri Musitaro, who specialized in “impossible” crimes and occult themes; and Nisio Tadasi, a master of short prose, strongly influenced by Howard Lovecraft—along with other masters of the genre.
