At the center of the story is a young journalist and the distant relative Julia, whom he somehow manages to fall in love with despite a significant age difference—and a man named Pedro Camacho. This strange fellow tirelessly writes scripts for radio serials that replace “soap operas” in a country where there is no television. He plays the leading male roles in them, and he is also the director-stager. The radio plays are incredibly popular: crowds of admirers gather outside the radio station. And it would all be fine, except that reality keeps mixing with fiction, and in the plot, strange twists suddenly begin to appear.
