Audio studio “Ardis” presents Bernhard Kellermann’s novel “The Tunnel” (1913): a classic example of “industrial fiction” and, at the same time, a deeply psychological work.
The book’s main character—a talented engineer and inventor—proposes and justifies a grand project: building a tunnel under the Atlantic Ocean that would connect America with Europe. He attracts a group of bankers and industrialists with his plan, which promises enormous profits in the long run. Construction begins, but the engineer is pursued by misfortunes: disasters on the construction site, a workers’ revolt, a family tragedy, a stock-market crash, criminal prosecution… Only strength of spirit and help from friends allow the protagonist to realize his dream.
