The brothers Strugatsky’s novellas included here — “The Cloud,” “Five Spoons of Elixir,” and “The Magicians” — were written specifically for film.
“The Cloud” is a free variation of the well-known work “Ugly Swans.”
“Five Spoons of Elixir” is a fantastic film script created based on the novel “Hunched Fate.” For the first time it was fully printed in the collection “Modern Science Fiction” in 1989. In 1990, a TV film titled “The Temptation of B.” was shot based on this script. The main character, writer Felix Sorokin, finds himself in a similar situation (unlike the script, which ends quite prosaically) and subsequently invents the plot of a future story on the go.
“Magicians” was written based on the famous work “Monday Begins on Saturday.” In 1982, director K. Bromberg filmed a New Year fairy-tale-parable “The Magicians” based on the Strugatskys’ work, which became a favorite film for several generations of viewers. The names of certain characters and the general description of the setting (some research institute in a remote provincial place where they study magic and sorcery), as well as some other details, were taken from the novella; however, “The Magicians” is not a film adaptation of this book and is an entirely independent story.
