The psychological subtleties of Ivan Bunin’s writing still interest the reader, even though the realities he wrote about have long since passed. The problem of minor landed gentry is no longer relevant, but the theme of a person’s growing up—which is the semantic center of the story “Numbers”—is still just as inextinguishable.
