Description

Avid traveler Khovsky, impressed by the island of Ceylon, tries—after returning home—to create something like it. But the climate of central Russia isn’t suited for palms or half-naked dancers. The dream of an earthly paradise ends sadly: the owner is hanged, and Ceylon is burned down. On its foundation, first a shelter for the mentally ill appears, then a prison; and in 1944, a defense factory is established, led by one of the representatives of an old Russian family—Andrey Trophimovich Cherepnin.

Like his predecessors, he serves the dream. But he knows: if you don’t hold it in tight reins, it can shatter everything and everyone, just as it has happened more than once in the history of Russia. Even Cherepnin’s grandson has to define his own attitude toward the dream—while moving closer to understanding the secrets of his family and his homeland.
