The novel “Royal Fortunes” tells about Nicholas I—about his love for the famous actress Varvara Asenkova.
Varvara Nikolayevna Asenkova (1817–1841) was a Russian stage actress of the Imperial Alexandrinsky Theatre.
Her very first appearance on the Alexandrinsky stage brought the aspiring actress an extraordinary triumph, which was promptly reported to the ruler, known for being a great connoisseur and tempter of ladies. After a performance, Nicholas I—an frequent theatregoer—went backstage to show his respect to the young actress. According to P. A. Karatygin, “After the play, His Majesty Nikolai Pavlovich paid her with his gracious attention and told her that such a successful debut guarantees her future successes on stage.” A few days later, Varvara Asenkova received, “in the most gracious way,” diamond earrings.
The Tsar’s interest became the starting point for gossip that surrounded the young actress for the rest of her life. It’s hard now to say for sure what of it was true and what was false slander.
One of Nicholas I’s serious enthusiasms—his love for the famous actress Varvara Asenkova—is told in the novel “Royal Fortunes” as well.
