In the book by Vsevolod Sergeyevich Solovyov (1849–1903), whom critics called “our Walter Scott,” there is the novel “The Maiden Tsar,” devoted to the events of the 17th century, the church schism, and the struggle between the followers of Nikon and Avvakum. At the center of the narrative is the figure of Tsarevna Sophia—Peter the Great’s sister—who entered into conflict with him, relying on the help of her favorite, Vasily Golitsyn.
