Lo Guanzhong, who became almost a legend in China, is considered the author of 6 classical Chinese novels, the main one of which is “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” Written in the 14th century, the novel was created based on chronicles and folk tales describing the events of the 3rd century, when China split into three kingdoms—Wei, Wu, and Shu—which waged continuous wars against one another. The first edition of Lo Guanzhong’s novel dates back to 1494, and over the next five centuries it consistently remained at the peak of its popularity. Over the entire existence of Chinese literature, no other novel has endured such a number of reissues: everyone read “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”—from the emperor to representatives of the lower social classes. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is the most widely read historical novel in late imperial and modern China, and its literary influence in the region is compared to Shakespeare’s works in English literature.
