Philip Murdstone is ruined. It’s been many years since his novel about sensitive teenagers won “all those prizes” and “made Asperger’s cool.” Philip’s last book sold only 313 copies. The solution, his agent Minerva Kinch says, is to switch gears: create a trilogy packed with the Dark Lord, the Dorkys, magical swords, lots of capital letters and random apostrophes—and, most importantly, an Amulet. Unfortunately, Philip hates Fantasy.
Drowning his sorrows in beer “Dark Entropy” at the pub near his cottage in Dartmoor, he vomits and heads toward the nearest stone circle, relieves himself at a standing stone, and collapses onto the grass—where a vision visits him. A certain creature named Pocket Rightness Good—dictates the first part of the saga about a banished hero, a corrupt wizard, and that very Lost Amulet. The resulting novel, which Philip calls “Dark Entropy,” is brilliant but incomplete—there’s obviously a need for a trilogy. Pocket appears again and offers Philip the rest of the story in exchange for the Amulet, which the evil wizard has hidden somewhere in the real world.
