John Dos Passos’s novel “Three Soldiers,” published in 1921, was recognized as one of the most honest and truthful works dedicated to the First World War. The book tells the story of three young people who voluntarily went to the front: a salesman Daniel Fuselli from San Francisco, a farmer Chrisfield from Indiana, and a musician John Andrews from New York.
Each of them has their own past, their own dreams and hopes. Each tries to find their place in this world, not understanding what the future has in store for them. And each, in one way or another, tries to resist violent death, lawlessness, and humiliations unleashed by a soulless army machine.
