A collection of short stories about Russian everyday life during a time of major change, when the country was transformed—and so were its people. Here, military routine, scuffles at flea markets, and office games coexist side by side. The main character gets pulled into criminal schemes, crosses paths with thieves and undercover operatives, ends up behind bars, and at the same time reflects on how prose is constructed. A special focus is on those close by: fellow servicemen, partners in the case, random fellow passengers, and cellmates. The narration is harsh, ironic, and exceptionally honest. This is an attempt to look back, piece together what has been lived through, and figure out what became of former ideals in a world of profit and endlessly shifting rules.
