The memoirs of Prince Ilarion Sergeyevich Vasilchikov, a prominent public and political figure of the early 20th century, a member of the 4th State Duma, span not just a single decade but many—covering the most interesting and multifaceted aspects of his career in social and political life. The prince came from an ancient line of Chernigov boyars who moved to Moscow in the 15th century and gave Russia one queen (Anna Vasilchikova, the fifth wife of Ivan the Terrible) and a number of prominent diplomats, military commanders, and public and state figures. His notes, under the general title “Everything That I Remembered…,” tell about events of the First World War, the February Revolution of 1917, about Emperor Alexander III, the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich, P. A. Stolypin, his own service in various institutions of pre-revolutionary Russia—and also contain interesting biographical information about the Vasilchikov family.
