Plague and smallpox epidemics almost destroyed humanity in the Middle Ages. An ordinary bout of flu took more lives than World War I. And yet, somewhere in secret military laboratories, strains of deliberately engineered combat viruses are still being kept—so deadly that if they’re ever released, civilization will be erased from the face of the Earth within days.
