A young American artist, Suzanne, comes to Japan. And unexpectedly, she finds her love there. Her beloved likes a Western way of life: he’s interested in Western culture and promises to be an outstanding husband molded by a Western model. But in real life everything turns out to be much more complicated. The man’s parents do not accept their son’s marriage to a foreign woman. And even the birth of a grandson doesn’t reconcile them with the hated daughter-in-law.
Gradually, alienation grows between Suzanne and her husband. They decide to part. But her favorite little one—her son, Kei—has to stay with his father…
