Description
In 1952, little Gorka finally moves with his parents into separate housing. The apartment is, in fact, a double stall in a stable of a women’s monastery on the outskirts of Bugulma. The monastery was converted into a prison, and the stalls of the adjacent stable were turned into apartments. For Gorka, Bugulma becomes a model of the big world. Here he will grow up, make friends, fall in love, do foolish things, and perform noble deeds. “The territory of the prison”—that’s what the residents call this place—is in reality the spot where, first as a child and then as a young adult, he learns what it means to be truly free. This novel is a coming-of-age story against the backdrop of major events: Stalin’s death, the exposure of the cult of personality, Gagarin’s flight into space, and the era of the sixties. In this book, the steady breathing of big history is surprisingly combined with the charm of “punk” romance, like in “The Word of the Kid,” and the calm rhythm of a broader chronicle, like in “Dusk Falls on Old Steps.”
