Chloe Morgentahl is a professional witch from Kraków, Poland. She works as a controller in the Sixth Kraków Committee and leads a perfectly ordinary life: she chats with her colleagues and, from time to time, clashes with her boss. In her world, magic is a familiar part of everyday life—shops sell spells for day-to-day needs; to activate an enchanted item, all you have to do is deduct a few units from a card; and special institutions—the Committees—keep watch over how ordinary people use magic, preventing dangerous paradoxes and safeguarding the city.

But the calm routine starts to crack when, near Chloe, increasingly inexplicable and disturbing events begin to happen—and soon it becomes clear that it’s not only her job and peace of mind that are at stake, but the very existence of the world.
