The novel by the outstanding Catalan writer Jaume Cabré, “The Shadow of the Eunuch,” is a funny and sad story about a sentimental, love-struck art enthusiast, a descendant of an ancient family of Jensusans who, in the search for the Path, Truth, and Life, devoted his student years to armed struggle for justice. “The Shadow of the Eunuch” is a novel permeated with literary and musical allusions. Like Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, whose structure it mirrors, the book presents a kind of “double requiem.” It is dedicated to the “memory of an angel,” Teresa, and sounds like the requiem of the main hero, Miquel Jensusans, for himself. The story unfolds like a deathbed confession. The hero ends up in a house where his childhood years passed (by the cruel will of chance, the ancestral home turned into a fashionable restaurant). As with Berg’s concerto, the novel tells the fates of all beloved and lost beings connected to the House of Jensusans.
