On the Orkney Islands in Scotland, in winter the sun shines for only six hours a day—justifying the name “the dark isles.” After a night storm, remains washed ashore, more than ten years old. The police believe they are the bodies of schoolgirl Ola and her boyfriend Liam, who went missing many years ago. Their car was found on a cliff, and for a long time rumors circulated that the couple committed suicide by jumping off the edge. However, Ola’s mother always believed that Liam killed her daughter and then fled.
With the new findings, none of the versions holds up, and the case is reopened. Freya Sinclair, a journalist who has recently returned to the Orkney Islands, decides to conduct her own investigation, believing the perpetrator may still be among the locals. In the process, Freya discovers a connection between the crime and her childhood memories. She finds it hard to sort out what’s going on, because doctors suspect she has autism—making it more difficult for her to distinguish truth from lies.
This is the first case Freya Sinclair takes on. The second book in the series hasn’t been released yet.
