Sjón is a well-known Icelandic writer who wrote the screenplay for Lars von Trier’s film "Dancer in the Dark".
His book was nominated for the Icelandic and Dublin literary prizes.
Set in 1635 in medieval Iceland—where superstition, poverty, and cruelty prevail—the main character, a poet, healer, and scholar Jónas Paulmason, is expelled for heretical teachings and feuds with local authorities. On the barren island where he is kept, he remembers his struggles with demons, the massacre of sailors, and the loss of three children. Despite all the hardships, he still believes in miracles and the power of good.
