Arkady and Georgy Vainer are recognized masters of the detective genre. In their works devoted to the work of criminal investigation inspector Stanislav Tikhonov, on the one hand there is always an engaging, tightly wound plot, and on the other—complex psychological and ethical problems are raised; the everyday life of a police officer is described without embellishment. It doesn’t work for Tikhonov to spare himself. To catch a criminal, you must always act fast, move ahead of events, use the smallest clues, think several moves ahead, unravel trails, and ask many people questions—yet every person has their own story, their own interest. In the end, it often can’t even be said that there’s any time for rest; the investigator has almost no free time, and his personal life is full of difficulties. Only a person with an acute sense of justice, convinced that a thief and a murderer belong in prison, can withstand such monstrous tension.
