Description
Everyone has a story, but until she turns nineteen, Juliette Grace doesn’t know hers. Her story begins when her father dies. When before dying he says an unfamiliar female name. When a woman calls and sobs on the phone, calling by his name—someone she won’t be able to hear anymore. When the police come to the doorstep and ask about Juliette’s past, and she has nothing to answer.

Juliette dreamed of dancing on stage, but because of her stepmother’s insistence she ended up bored in secretarial courses. Juliette invented an amazing biography for herself, but obediently lived under the control of indifferent adults. Now she is free to live as she wants—and, faintly sensing the start of a new plot, she sets off to search for herself, her roots, and the truth about her mother’s death. And so she ends up in London’s Theatre District.

In the London we know, the Theatre District never existed. The Theatre District is a kingdom of illusions, a world beyond this world, full of wonderful stories beyond reality. Here, day and night, for centuries without stopping, The Show goes on, and nothing is more important in the world. The director and the actors are almost celestial beings: they belong to ancient bloodlines whose blood, flesh, and thoughts have been feeding high art for not just one century. Bewitched spectators stream into the Theatre District and stay, unable to look away from the magic.

The magic shines brilliantly, but on its backside lies blackness. The outside world has no power over the District; even the police can’t get in. Here rules only one law: The Show must go on. The Theatre District is smoke and mirrors, and Juliette will have to learn how far people are capable of going so that some stories are never told— and who pays for it with their life.
