A cozy coming-of-age novel in the spirit of Dickens, Lemony Snicket, and “I Capture the Castle.”
One day, on a stormy night in 1928, an enormous whale is washed ashore on the coast of the British Channel. By law, the body of the animal belongs to the king—but twelve-year-old Cristabel has other plans. Along with her brother, sister, and a few other household members, she puts on a theater show inside the giant whale’s carcass. There she can hide from useless foster parents and their clueless educational schemes.
But Cristabel has no idea what role this child’s improvised theater will play in her life, when ten years later she and her younger brother end up at the very heart of Nazi-occupied France as secret agents of the British Crown.
