The Civil War had barely ended when a new misfortune struck the country: a drought. In autumn 1921, the land returned none of the grain that had been planted in the spring. Mishkin’s father died, his mother fell ill from starvation. The twelve-year-old Mishka was the oldest of the children—the only breadwinner in the family. People streamed toward faraway Tashkent, where, rumor had it, you could earn bread.
