Tartarin of Tarascon

The famous “lion-killer,” the “fearless, great, incomparable” Tartarin—a small, plump man, a funny and touching hero of the French writer Alphonse Daudet—lives in the town of Tarascon in southern France.

This dreamer and romantic, braggart and chatterbox, dreams of travels and adventures, yet he is constantly getting into ridiculous and amusing situations. Having Don Quixote’s soul, he rushes toward feats, but the heavy, pampered body of Sancho Panza gets in the way of his grand plans.

And yet one day Tartarin will leave his cozy home and garden with the baobab tree and set off for Algeria to hunt lions—toward adventures and dangers.
