Emira Tucker is a young Black girl who hasn’t yet figured out who she wants to become and what she wants to do in life. She works as a nanny for an internet celebrity, Alix Chamberlain, taking care of her little daughter. One day, due to unforeseen circumstances, Emira is forced to take the girl out of the house and into a shopping center to kill time. A security guard who sees a white girl accompanied by a Black Emira misinterprets the situation and detains them, believing the girl was kidnapped. This is the beginning of a story full of unexpected twists and events that won’t let you look away for even a second. “Such an Entertaining Age” is a multi-layered work. It talks about class, social, and racial oppression and privilege, about the joys and hardships of youth, as well as the past and the future. “Age” in Kylee Reed’s book is indeed entertaining, but it is also magical and frightening, heavy and stunning, romantic and desperate.
