Lowen Ashley is on the brink of financial ruin. So she accepts an offer from the husband of the famous writer Verity Crawford to become a co-author of her novel, since after an accident Verity doesn’t get out of bed and doesn’t respond to anything. Among the drafts of Lowen’s new book, she accidentally finds an unfinished biography—the one Verity certainly never intended to publish. The text is filled with madness, and within it is a confession to murder. At first Lowen hesitates to tell her husband, Jeremy, whom she feels some sympathy for. But when Lowen begins to suspect that Verity is pretending to be sick—and at night she walks around the sleeping house—Lowen understands that she must find the truth for the sake of her own safety.
