The protagonist of “Secret Notes,” A. S. Pushkin, appears in an unusual perspective—in the variety of intimate relationships, in complicated reflections on life, the nature of sin, love, and creativity, as well as the complexity of the Russian poet’s life path leading to a tragic end. “Secret Notes” has caused—and continues to cause—a wave of the most contradictory assessments; many Pushkin scholars consider it a talented hoax. But all of this only fuels interest in them.
