Fourteen-year-old Lili Owens lost her mother as a child in a tragic accident and blames herself for her death. Her relationship with her father doesn’t work out because of his despotic character. One day, Lili runs away from home together with Rosalyn, a Black girl, and ends up at the home of three dark-skinned Bowen sisters, where she learns to keep bees, learns about her mother’s life, tries to understand and accept herself, faces hardships, and finds a true family.
It is a story of loss and finding—of hope, love, faith, and the ability to forgive. It is about people who have discovered the true meaning of the concept of “choosing what matters.” About people for whom skin color and material well-being are irrelevant. It is a story of searching for oneself and one’s place in the world.
