In the picture, the devoted master has portrayed young Leah—beautiful, pure, and full of uncertainty, a girl from the provinces. The portrait catches the attention of a modeling agency, which offers the “Cinderella” depicted on it a contract that will turn her quiet life upside down. But this story is not only about the bright glare of camera flashes, runways, and the lights of New York—it also has a dark side: the Delancey family’s past is rooted in a wartime ghetto.
