This is the story of Mark’s second investigation, already familiar to readers from the book "Let’s Go to Unalaska." In search of answers to various questions, Mark helps his pen pal friend — a French photographer, Jean-Pierre Garcia — who shared with him an astonishing piece of news. He learns that one of Jean-Pierre’s ancestors came to Russia with Napoleon’s army in 1812 and never returned to France. During the investigation, Mark uncovers the story of betrayal, a sad love story, and the tragic fate of a man destroyed by war.
