The story of the deaths of 9 tourists at the foot of the Mountain of the Dead—where, according to legend, the last resting place of 9 Mansi people was found—is wrapped in mysteries and mysticism. For more than half a century, disputes have continued about the causes of that tragedy: anomalous natural phenomena or technogenic factors? The Dyatlov Group members were “victims of a ‘force of elements they… were unable to overcome,’” as stated in the resolution to end the case—or was it an intentional crime? What were those “fireballs” seen in the sky that night by local residents? Why are the bodies of three of the dead—born on January 11, 12, and 13—found lying one after another in the same order? What made them, in the night, in horror, cut open the tent and flee from the camp site without looking back? How can their many injuries, mutilations, and traces of radioactive contamination be explained? Are there any “closed” pages in this story kept by the authorities to prevent “information leaks”? The authors of this book conducted their own investigation. And it would not be an exaggeration to say that it began “on fresh tracks,” because it was the search group led by Boris Slobtsov that found the tent of the Dyatlov group and the first victims. By working with other searchers, analyzing all—also hard-to-access—material, separating false facts from true ones, the authors offer the most convincing version of the tragedy that unfolded at the foot of the Mountain of the Dead to date.
