“The Mysterious Island” is a Robinson Crusoe-style novel by French writer Jules Verne. The book continues the well-known works by Jules Verne, “The Children of Captain Grant” and “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.” It tells about events that took place on a fictional island, where several people who had escaped from America due to the Civil War were cast by a hot-air balloon. The main characters are five Americans who find themselves on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean in the Southern Hemisphere. Thanks to the skill and ingenuity of engineer Cyrus Smith and the help of a mysterious benefactor, they successfully establish themselves on the island.
