Captain Aleksey Cherkasov, returned from the front, is appointed chief of criminal investigation for one of the large district centers. In recent times, several audacious crimes have been committed here at once: the State Bank branch has been robbed, a gathering of thieves’ “authorities” has been shot up, a government commission visiting the factory for an inspection has been massacred… The bandits control the situation—they’re ruthless, determined, clever, and cold-blooded. It’s possible they are Abwehr agents who stayed in the city for sabotage work.
