“Son of the Thunder God” is a story about how Finland became a country where, even though there are many problems, there isn’t a single fool. The Finnish path to success, as usual, doesn’t go without divine providence. The main character of the novel is the son of the Scandinavian Thunder God, sent to Earth to straighten out a lost and disillusioned people with their native northern gods. The Thunder God’s son, Rutya, swaps bodies with a local resident, acquires students, and thinks about how best to run his own advertising campaign. In the end, he opens a psychiatric clinic and leads such a successful practice that soon there are no neurotics left anywhere in Finland. The country heals, Rutya’s mission is complete—until it turns out that the local tax inspector is expecting a child from him, and the reputation of the savior may be seriously tarnished.
