The Holy Land

«Holy Land» is the novella from Lagerkvist’s «New Testament» cycle, the last in the trilogy about Tovi. The main hero of this novella is Giovanni, a former priest who left the priesthood for earthly love—an outcast, alienated from God and existence in the same way as the previous characters of the cycle—Varavva, Agasfer, and Tovi. But the yearning for the Holy Land in the human soul never disappears—it is its very essence.
