Witnesses of the Games

Witnesses of the Games

Description
A cycling track in Krylatskoye and the “Cosmos” hotel, Pepsi-Cola and Adidas sneakers, a teddy bear that takes off into the sky, and the song “The Crowd Grows Quieter on the Stands”—all of this entered our lives thanks to the 1980 Olympics. The first Games in Eastern Europe, the largest international celebration in the USSR, the Moscow Olympics in every respect—this is a historical phenomenon. It just so happened that several other major events coincided with them and changed the course of history: the introduction of troops into Afghanistan, Vladimir Vysotsky’s death, a new phase of the Cold War—initiated by the boycott of the Games by the United States.

“Witnesses of the Games” is 15 big conversations with very different people who prepared the Moscow Olympics, took part in them, or made them the subject of their study. Athletes and translators, members of the Organizing Committee and artists, researchers of fashion and architecture—everyone has their own story, and together they form a collective portrait of this remarkable time.
