Easter, or the Bright Resurrection of Christ, is the central Christian holiday celebrated around the world. It carries the ideas of light and goodness, proclaims the triumph of life over death, and reminds us of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. For Russian culture, Easter is especially significant: it was in Russia that a distinctive tradition of Easter stories developed—where the main motives become love and mercy, forgiveness, spiritual renewal, and a person’s path to God. Many authors turned to this genre, including classics from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose works are collected in this edition. Stories by N. A. Leikin, A. P. Chekhov, I. A. Bunin, L. N. Andreev, A. I. Kuprin, and other writers convey a warm holiday atmosphere filled with care for one’s neighbor—and show how Easter was celebrated in different corners of Russia. Several texts included in the collection are published for the first time from pre-revolutionary sources.
The design uses antique postcards and illustrations from periodicals of the 19th—early 20th century. The book is intended for the widest circle of readers and will make a wonderful gift for the Bright Easter holiday.
